About the role
The Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) team can provide you the opportunity to build and operate a suite of massive scale, integrated cloud services in a broadly distributed, multi-tenant cloud environment. OCI is committed to providing the best in cloud products that meet the needs of our customers who are tackling some of the world’s biggest challenges. We offer unique opportunities for smart, hands-on engineers with the expertise and passion to solve difficult problems in distributed highly available services and virtualized infrastructure. At every level, our engineers and leaders have a significant technical and business impact designing and building innovative new systems to power our customer’s business critical applications. Identity and Access Management (IAM) allows users to control who has access to their cloud resources. As part of the Cloud Platform organization, the team is responsible for the design and build of core services that are utilized by internal and external customers alike. The Identity Control Plane team is primarily responsible for servicing CRUD API calls on all Identity-related entities like users, groups, policies, and compartments across all global regions while ensuring consistency and reliability. Who are we looking for? We are looking for development managers with distributed systems experience. You should have experience with the design of major features and launching them into production. You’ve operated high-scale services and understand how to make them more resilient. You work on most projects and tasks independently. We are looking for an experienced development engineering manager to lead the development of the Identity Service, one of the most critical services within OCI that powers the customer authentication experience for OCI Console and Identity Platform services, supporting native authentication, federated identity providers, Single Sign-On (SSO), OpenID Connect (OIDC), OAuth2 flows, Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), and secure session management at Oracle Cloud scale. This person will own the engineering execution for a globally distributed service that is part of OCI’s authentication data plane and is responsible for delivering highly available, secure, and scalable authentication experiences serving millions of enterprise users. You will work closely with product management, architecture, cloud operations, and cross-functional engineering teams to deliver reliable, secure, and high-quality solutions for enterprise-scale applications and developer platforms. The ideal candidate brings deep experience in software engineering leadership, distributed systems, platform development, and Agile delivery, along with a passion for mentoring teams and building scalable engineering processes. You will also foster a strong engineering culture grounded in innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement. You understand operational excellence and how to instill a culture of being proactive with your teammates. You find anomalies in graphs that didn’t trip any alarms and root cause problems before they become real problems. The person in this role will get a lot done on a daily basis, drive tactical execution of features and projects, and own feature design. Manages team delivering scalable distributed systems and components on a 2–4 quarter horizon. Standardizes engineering practices and scalability requirements across teams; oversees optimization for high‑throughput, hyper‑scale workloads; and ensures effective use of distributed state tools and data plane platforms. Guides teams to design fault‑tolerant, in‑service‑upgradable systems, set SLO‑aligned durability/availability targets, and implement resiliency mechanisms (load‑shedding, throttling, rate‑limiting). Provides oversight for KPIs, telemetry, and moderately complex dashboards; directs design of functional/correctness requirements, fault‑injection tests, and replication/synchronization strategies. Ensures proactive incident management, operational readiness, and on‑call coverage; drives encryption/access control practices, remediation plans, and compliance documentation. Oversees development and maintenance of automation/IaC and partners with teams on change‑management plans enabling safe patching, updates, and rollbac.
