About this role: Wells Fargo is seeking a Principal Engineer. In this role, you will: Act as an advisor to leadership to develop or influence applications, network, information security, database, operating systems, or web technologies for highly complex business and technical needs across multiple groups. Lead the strategy and resolution of highly complex and unique challenges requiring in-depth evaluation across multiple areas or the enterprise, delivering solutions that are long-term, large-scale and require vision, creativity, innovation, advanced analytical and inductive thinking. Translate advanced technology experience, an in-depth knowledge of the organizations tactical and strategic business objectives, the enterprise technological environment, the organization structure, and strategic technological opportunities and requirements into technical engineering solutions. Provide vision, direction and expertise to leadership on implementing innovative and significant business solutions. Maintain knowledge of industry best practices and new technologies and recommends innovations that enhance operations or provide a competitive advantage to the organization. Strategically engage with all levels of professionals and managers across the enterprise and serve as an expert advisor to leadership. Required Qualifications: 7+ years of Engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education. Desired Qualifications: Design and build low-latency, high-throughput trading platforms from the ground up, supporting demanding front-office and electronic trading workloads. Architect and implement event-driven systems with a strong focus on performance, resiliency, scalability, and operational excellence. Lead the design of highly available and fault-tolerant solutions, ensuring rapid recovery and business continuity during production incidents. Provide hands-on technical leadership across technologies including Java, Solace, Kafka, Coherence/GridGain, MongoDB, and OpenFin. Drive adoption of AI-powered and agentic solutions to improve business processes, engineering productivity, and operational efficiency. Demonstrate deep understanding of the post-trade lifecycle, covering both exchange-traded and OTC products across multiple asset classes. Oversee the development, deployment, and support of 24x6 and 24x7 trading platforms, ensuring stability, performance, and regulatory compliance. Evaluate and leverage modern engineering toolsets and AI-assisted development platforms such as Devin, Claude Code, and other emerging technologies. Lead and mentor globally distributed engineering teams, fostering collaboration, innovation, and a high-performance culture. Partner closely with business stakeholders, product owners, operations teams, and senior leadership to deliver strategic technology initiatives. Strong strategic thinking and architectural decision-making skills. Proven ability to lead large-scale transformation and modernization initiatives. Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills. Passion for innovation, automation, and continuous improvement. Ability to balance hands-on technical involvement with people and delivery leadership responsibilities.
